openSUSE:Tumbleweed installation

openSUSE Tumbleweed can be installed either by downloading and launching an installation image to start from scratch or by upgrading from a stable release.

Installation

To install openSUSE Tumbleweed download the latest Tumbleweed ISO below, verify the download, write it to an USB stick and launch the installation from there after a reboot:

For systems with RAM less than 4 GiB install OS on XFS or ext4 file systems. Systems with insufficient amount of RAM work too slow with BTRFS. To free RAM on systems with built-in graphics you can reduce amount of RAM dedicated to iGPU.

BTRFS has enormously high write amplification. You can destroy weak media without wear leveling using BTRFS, such as SD cards and USB thumb drives.

A number of components hard-require the presence of SSE2, especially e.g. Mesa and librsvg. Programs may just terminate with SIGILL. Because of this, there is a limit to how much of a Tumbleweed system, particularly programs requiring a graphical environment, can be exercised on an old CPU.

Warning: Please be aware that the Rescue CD cannot be used to upgrade an existing install!
The installer on the Live CDs requires an active network connection for downloading packages for installation. Use the full DVD if you do not want to depend on that.

Upgrade

In the context of this article 'Upgrade' means 'moving from an older openSUSE release (eg. openSUSE Leap 15.2) to Tumbleweed.
